As strategy assistant for higher education innovation, Genesia Thompson supports MCAN's efforts to advance student success and equity in Michigan's higher education institutions through administrative, logistical, and programmatic support — including work with the Detroit Drives Degrees Community College Collaborative (D3C3). Her other key responsibilities include coordinating meetings, supporting grant processes, facilitating professional development opportunities, and strengthening partnerships with K-12, higher education, and other stakeholders.

Prior to this position, Genesia worked in the MCAN office as an AmeriCorps member serving in the VISTA program, supporting a variety of projects and initiatives across several departments. She has also worked as a state program coordinator for Rise, a national nonprofit focused on supporting college students and promoting democracy.

Genesia earned a Bachelor of Science in sociology and nonprofit administration from Central Michigan University. She knew when she graduated high school that college would be a vital experience for her growth and success. Higher education is also important to her personally, as a Black woman, because she understands the obstacles that her predecessors overcame to earn access to college. Genesia believes that higher education creates inspiring new avenues for students not just through formal education, but also through opportunities to make personal connections and participate in student leadership. She was able to gain experience in diversity, equity, and inclusion work by serving on advisory committees, conducting policy reviews, and participating in advocacy and community mobilization initiatives. College gave her the professional network and skills to confidently enter the nonprofit sector.

Outside of work, Genesia enjoys reading, cooking, creating various types of visual art, hiking, yoga and exercise, and trying new experiences with friends.
