SCECH: 20 credit(s) in College Preparation and Selection

Winter 2025 — Advancing College & Career Readiness Through a Comprehensive School Counseling Program Course Registration

In this course, you will analyze your current practices and consider ways to improve your college and career programs. You will build knowledge and skills in several areas, including how to advocate for school counseling services; how to evaluate postsecondary education and career advising practices; how to build school, community, and postsecondary partnerships; and how to maximize counselors’ time and effectiveness. You will engage in constructive discussions in a learning community with colleagues during each session, and complete practical, hands-on activities throughout the course.

This class is made up of four sessions culminating in a Final Action Plan. We estimate that the workload for these courses is around four hours per week, which is reflected in the awarding of SCECHs.

  • Session 1: Explore Ethical Practice and Advocacy in Postsecondary Advising
  • Session 2: Evaluate and Refine Postsecondary and Career Advising Programs
  • Session 3: Work with Partners and Build Social Capital
  • Session 4: Maximize the Effectiveness of Your Postsecondary Education and Career Advising Program

The course is 5-weeks long, beginning Jan. 13 and ending Feb. 16, with a one-hour virtual meeting every week (hosted Tuesdays 3-4 p.m.); the fifth meeting is an optional office hours if you need help with your final assignment. Attending meetings is not mandatory but highly encouraged; SCECHs will be reduced if any meetings are missed, but it will not affect your standing in the course. The meeting schedule is as follows:

  • Jan. 14
  • Jan. 21
  • Jan. 28
  • Feb. 4
  • Feb. 11

MCAN is offering these mini-courses in partnership with College Futures. We are offering 1 section of this course, facilitated by Dr. Glinda Rawls. There is a MAXIMUM of 30 seats available. Those who register after we reach 30 seats will be waitlisted. Priority consideration will be granted to school counselors.

We anticipate offering 10 SCECHs in college prep and selection and 10 SCECHs in career exploration upon successful completion of the course. The maximum amount of 20 total SCECHs will be awarded to individuals who complete the entire course, including participation in all live virtual sessions. Reduced SCECHs for partial completion of coursework will not be awarded.

The course is open to all school counselors, college and career advisers (except AmeriCorps members), and educators. However, a limited number of seats are available and priority consideration will be granted to school counselors. Remaining seats will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Additional names will be placed on a waiting list. Registrants who secure a seat will receive a $250 scholarship paid directly to College Futures by MCAN to access the course at no cost.

The deadline to register is Wednesday, Jan. 8.
