LANSING, Mich. — Michigan College Access Network is excited to welcome Tarek M. Sobh, president of Lawrence Technological University, to the MCAN Board of Directors. In addition to serving as president at LTU, Sobh is also a professor of electrical and computer engineering. He earned a Bachelor of Science in engineering from Alexandria University in Egypt, then went on to earn master’s and doctorate degrees in computer and information science from the University of Pennsylvania.
“MCAN's mission to increase college readiness, participation and completion in Michigan coincides with LTU’s work in developing the STEM-trained, technologically savvy workforce for the future by making our programs more accessible to students from diverse backgrounds throughout the state,” said Sobh. “I am very excited to join MCAN’s board of directors and help further its mission and vision.”
Sobh was hired as LTU’s provost in July 2020, and he was appointed president in January 2022. Prior to his work at LTU, Sobh worked at the University of Bridgeport for 25 years, serving in a variety of positions in teaching, research and administration. His job titles included executive vice president of research and economic development; founding dean of the College of Engineering, Business, and Education; founding director of the Interdisciplinary Robotics, Intelligent Sensing, and Control Laboratory; senior vice president for graduate studies and research; and dean of the School of Engineering. He has also been named Distinguished Professor and Dean of Engineering Emeritus by the university.
“Michigan’s private colleges and universities play a key role in helping us reach Sixty by 30, and we look forward to the perspectives that Dr. Sobh will bring to our board of directors,” said Ryan Fewins-Bliss, MCAN executive director. “We are also eager to learn from his experiences in technology and STEM as we work to build a postsecondary education system that ensures all students — especially low-income students, first-generation college-going students and students of color — have equitable opportunities to pursue fulfilling and well-paying careers in Michigan’s growing knowledge-based economy.”
