AdviseMI seeks near-peer college advisers for 2021-22 academic year

LANSING, Mich. — AdviseMI, an AmeriCorps program of Michigan College Access Network (MCAN), is recruiting college advisers for the 2021-22 academic year. Established in 2015, AdviseMI is an AmeriCorps program that places recent college graduates of partner schools in over 70 select high schools across Michigan to assist students in their transition from high school to postsecondary education. “Placing trained advisers in high schools throughout Michigan communities is essential to relieving the pinch on the high school to college pipeline that has been greatly exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Ryan Fewins-Bliss, MCAN executive director. “Whether students are interested in community college, a four-year university, or other routes, the AdviseMI program puts an expert in their corner to help them through the exploratory phase to find their fit and envision their future.”

In 2018, MCAN's AdviseMI program was recognized as an Outstanding National Service Program at the 2018 Governor's Service Awards after improving college access services at more than 120 Michigan schools. The program targets communities with low college-going and adult educational attainment rates. Advisers serve full time for one year of service, working alongside school professionals to ensure students are getting needed support.

“The advisers who join AdviseMI will have the opportunity to launch their career and have a lasting, positive impact on their communities,” said Jenny McArdle, director of service strategy at MCAN. “We are looking for passionate individuals who have an enthusiasm for the college advising process and are committed to helping future college-goers. Having the guidance of a trained adviser in their corner minimizes the intimidation around postsecondary planning for high school students.”

Applicants are not required to have advising experience, but they are required to attend an intensive four-week training. This training prepares advisers to help students navigate exploring colleges, admissions tests, financial aid, and much more. Advisers receive a $25,000 living stipend along with an additional educational award ($6,345) for completing the program, which they can use to pay for future educational costs or pay off student loans. Advisers must live in or near the community they are serving and have reliable transportation.
