LANSING, Mich. — Early this morning, the Michigan legislature passed the fiscal year 2025 budget bills, which will now go to Gov. Whitmer for her signature. These bills demonstrate the state’s ongoing commitment to K-12 and postsecondary education.
Statement from Michigan College Access Network Executive Director Ryan Fewins-Bliss:
“MCAN supports the continued investment by the governor and the legislature to K-12 and postsecondary education, which will help build momentum toward our Sixty by 30 attainment goal. We know that states that invest highly in these areas build economic independence for their citizens and grow their populations. The new provisions that incentivize student transfer pathways and strengthen student success are incredibly helpful for Michiganders and will lead to better educational and career outcomes.
“While we're disappointed in the phase out of the Michigan Tuition Grant, the increase in the Michigan Achievement Scholarship, including the creation of the Community College Guarantee, offers exciting new opportunities for our students — especially low-income students, first-generation college-going students and students of color. Michigan College Access Network thanks Senators Anthony, McCann and Camilleri and Representatives Witwer, Steckloff and Weiss, as well as Gov. Whitmer, for their continued leadership for Michigan's students.”
